USB audio commuter in USB Audio Thespian/Recorder PRO and Audio Evolution Mobile
Last update: Feb 27, 2022
Introduction
eXtream Software Development has written a custom USB audio driver from scratch considering Android did not support USB audio until Android 5. Even Android 5 and upward has very limited back up for USB audio devices (see below) and as such this driver remains very useful for every Android version higher than iii.one. Adjacent to that, our commuter provides depression latency, making it possible for case to play virtual instruments in real-time on many devices that cannot do this using the Android driver. The driver supports mono, stereo and multi-channel streams, 16-, 24- and 32-bit resolutions and any sample rate that the device provides. If your device exposes internal mute, volume and/or proceeds controls, they tin exist controlled also. For our media player, USB Audio Player PRO, the driver allows to play in chip-perfect, something that the Android commuter will never do.
The following Android apps of eXtream Software Development have this driver embedded. Note that you cannot apply this driver to play or record sound in other apps!
Audio Evolution Mobile is the leading multitrack sound and MIDI DAW on Android. You lot can enable USB audio past doing an in-app purchase or by purchasing USB Audio Recorder PRO. Without in-app buy, the app lets you examination your USB sound interface/mic by limiting the recording time.
USB Audio Player PRO is a loftier quality media role player that allows the highest quality possible sound playback to your DAC and supports most audio formats like DSD, FLAC, MQA, APE, MP3, etc. It can also function as UPnP media renderer and can play in fleck-perfect.
USB Sound Recorder PRO is a basic recording app without editing facilities. Tape mono, stereo or multi-channel audio and play back in stereo. Simultaneous playback and recording is not supported.
Costless trials are bachelor from this site.
USB host OTG cablevision
In lodge to connect your USB audio interface to your Android device you lot will need a USB OTG cablevision to trigger the 'USB host' functionality of your Android device (for devices with a micro-USB connector). This is the cablevision you demand (when you order a cablevision, make sure it says 'OTG') :
If you have a USB-C connector on your Android device, you lot will need a converter cablevision that provides both data and power. If your Android device does not come up with i, brand sure to purchase one that looks like this:
If you need to requite your audio device extra power, y'all can either use a powered USB hub or this OTG-Y cablevision:
This cable is similar to a standard USB OTG cable with a total sized female person USB connector on the end that connects to the audio interface, but it branches off into 2 connectors on the other end. 1 is a standard male micro USB connector for connecting to the android device and the other is a female micro USB connector. The female micro USB connector allows the power to plug in a standard male micro USB wall charger to inject power into the circuit.
Annotation: some devices require 500mA while some Android wall-adapters only supply 300mA, and then using an OTG-Y cablevision will not help with those and a more powerful adapter or a powered USB hub may exist necessary.
Practice Non apply or buy this 1:
This USB hub/adapter tin piece of work, but may force your DAC into USB1 way, limiting sample charge per unit and resolution, and so it'southward not recommended:
Starting the app
Important: it'southward all-time to connect your USB device Earlier starting the app, otherwise it frequently does not get detected! When you connected your device before starting the app and it gave y'all a 'failed to initialize or open the USB device' message or similar, we ask y'all kindly to quickly use the Play Store refund selection in case you purchased the total version and try out the demo. Please contact united states of america if your device does not piece of work.
Hint: for nearly reliable recording, put your device into 'Airplane' way and close downwards equally many tasks as possible. Please likewise disable whatsoever bombardment saving mode if present. Currently, USB Audio Recorder PRO and Sound Evolution Mobile have to run in the foreground, then do not switch to other apps during recording or playback since groundwork apps only become limited cpu time and some Android device halt USB signals.
Nosotros are besides NOT affiliated with a programme called 'USB Audio Recorder', 'USB Audio Tester' or 'USB Field Recorder' on the Play Store!
Troubleshooting
Ok, then you connected your USB sound device before starting the app and information technology all the same doesn't work, what to practise?
If both your Android and USB device are in the supported devices lists:
- Some devices require more than ability than your Android device can evangelize. If your audio device is bus-powered (no wall adapter) y'all could try putting a powered USB hub in between.
- Reboot your Android device with the USB audio interface continued
- Some devices require yous to plow on USB debugging from the Android settings -> Developer options. Please let united states of america know if yours does.
- If you have a micro-USB port on your Android device, make sure you actually accept an OTG adaptor cable and not some sort of simple USB type converter, otherwise USB host mode is not activated.
- If your audio device has a USB light, check if it turns on when y'all connect it to your Android device. If it is not lit, then either the cabling is not right or your audio device consumes too much power. Note that the USB light must already be lit Earlier starting the app.
- Some devices are just picky (FiiO E17/E18 for case). Try to disconnect the cablevision and reconnect it, outset the app, see if it helps.
- For the FiiO E17: effort to cycle the input until it is at the USB input again, exercise this before starting the app, but with the USB cable connected
- Get into Android Settings -> Storage -> tap on the menu at the top right and select USB computer connection and see if MTP is enabled
- Buy another OTG cable, it happens then many times that people switch cables and things get-go working once again, it's surprising.
If the app recognizes your device and all looks ok until you printing play or record and cypher happens or no signal comes in:
- Your Android device supports USB host, but something is missing in the kernel (or peradventure the hardware) that prevents the apply of the required USB isochronous style for transferring audio data. Device detection is washed using other types of advice, which is why it did get detected.
If the app recognizes your device and all looks ok until you press play or record and then y'all become a 'Failed to outset recording/playback':
- Many Huawei devices for example hold on to their ain USB sound driver and do non free/release the USB device for utilize with other apps like ours
If your Android or USB device is not in the list:
- Make sure your Android device has USB host way: Google your device like 'Samsung S7 USB host style'. If yous find hits proverb information technology doesn't have USB host way, so your device will non work. If you find hits stating that a custom kernel can activate USB host mode, so your device will not piece of work unless yous have that specific custom ROM. Most recent devices with USB-C accept USB host mode
- Use the app 'USB host viewer' to observe out if your Android device is seen by Linux (the actual operating organisation that Android runs on top of). If your USB audio device is non see by this app, it means that Linux does not meet it and hence Android or the app cannot use it. The reason can be a cablevision or power problem or missing USB host mode. If the app does come across information technology and Android does non meet the device, and so your Android device is misconfigured: information technology thinks it has no USB host way, whereas it actually does in hardware. Just rooting your device and running the app 'USB host bank check' and pressing the 'Fix' push button tin can solve it.
- Make sure your USB device is form-compliant: Google your audio device to check if it works under Linux or with an iPad since it then has a bigger gamble of working (not that we use Linux drivers, but they usually have course-compliant devices working).
- Check if your device has a Rockchip processor. Virtually older Rockchip processors do non support USB host.
- Virtually cheap unbranded/unknown/Chinese tablets practise not work. If it didn't cost 150 euro or more than, it is probable it doesn't accept the hardware or kernel needed.
If that didn't aid and yous are sure yous have an Android device with USB host mode, you could ship us a more detailed log by following these steps:
- Open up the app
- Select settings or prefs
- Select Logging
- Select Log to file
- Exit the app
- Force close the app or restart your Android device with the USB audio device fastened
- Starting time the app over again and leave it again.
- Please e-mail the log file USBAudioLog.txt for USB Audio Recorder PRO, UAPP/UAPP.txt for USB Audio Player PRO or AudioEvolution/AELog.txt for Audio Evolution Mobile to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let united states know which Android and USB audio devices y'all are using
Android 5 and up
Google introduced USB audio support in Android 5, unfortunately our tests have shown that their driver has several limitations (aside not offering low latency). Please see here for more information:
http://www.extreamsd.com/USBAudioRecorderPRO/Android5USB.html
Special instructions for Sony devices
Some newer Sony devices likes the Z5 demand special handling to detect USB devices:
- Connect the DAC to the cable
- Open up settings, device connectedness, USB connectivity, then click the push to observe USB device.
- While it is detecting, plug in the other end of the OTG cablevision to the telephone.
- If your OTG has the optional power in connect information technology at present.
Supported USB audio devices
Your USB audio device must be class-compliant in club to work. USB 1.ane and USB ii.0 grade-compliant devices are supported with either USB sound spec 1.0 or 2.0. The following tabular array gives an overview of the devices that either we tested or that have been tested by beta testers. In no fashion we can be held responsible for a device non working on your specific Android device, since every combination or fifty-fifty different Android versions on the aforementioned device can pose new problems. We have a free demo version where you tin test out your device combination before purchase.
Delight take note: considering at that place are hundreds of Android and USB sound devices out at that place, nosotros did not manage to test them all!

Supported Android devices
In theory, all Android devices that meet the following requirements should work:
- Android 3.one or college (no root required!!)
- Device supports USB host mode
If your device does has a micro-USB port, you need a USB OTG cable. This is a cable with a male micro-USB connector on one side (for connecting to your Android device) and a female total-sized USB port for connecting your USB sound device. Note that information technology must say 'OTG', since that activates the host mode of your Android device. If your device has a USB-C port, then you simply need a cable providing both power and data, since there is no existent concept of OTG anymore for USB-C.
If your device is not in the working or non-working listing, please requite us feedback if information technology works or not.
Notation: your Android device may need a powered USB hub if information technology does not supply enough power to an sound device which is non self-powered.
Working Android devices
2021: The list of devices is non updated regularly anymore. Nosotros see that almost all devices with a USB-C connector piece of work (except for Huawei devices).
